Paragliding

For Valerie's birthday, she decided to go paragliding. This is not something she would have considered 6 months ago, but that's what living in Peru will do to you.

The initial plan was for her to fly on the actual birthday, a Wednesday. Since Addison doesn't have school on Wednesday afternoons, he was going to tag along to take photos.

Unfortunately, there wasn't enough wind that day. And wind is a pretty important factor when it comes to flying. So the expedition was put off until the following Saturday. This meant that Britt could tag along to record the event for posterity, but that Addison could not join, because of a conflict with his surfing classes. (These are the breaks.)

The paragliding pilots had proposed to meet us in Miraflores, where they have a booth set up on the malecon (boardwalk along the cliffs, overlooking the ocean). Then they planned to drive us down the coast to Pachacamac, which is about 25-30 minutes south of Lima. It's also the site of a very impressive series of pre-Columbian temples. There, they suggested, we were sure to find plenty of wind for a good 20 minute ride, or more.

In the end, however, the weather was on our side, and we only had to go as far as Chorillos, a neighborhood of Lima, along the coast, just south of Barranco.

Once we got there, and they started to unfurl the paragliders, Britt decided he couldn't resist trying it out, too. So we both got to fly.
The photos tell the rest:
